Hot Bread Kitchen Bakery
Chief Bread Officer
We are hiring an executive staff member– the Chief Bread Officer—who will help us to grow our bakery, increase training capacity, and ensure employability of our graduates. The CBO will have the opportunity to grow the product line and develop products for sale. CBO will be on the bakery floor for more than 75% of their time.
Job Description:
1. Manage the bakery by balancing business and training goals under direction of Executive Director and Board of Directors
2. Research and develop bread formulas with input of bakery trainees under direction of Executive Director.
3. Maintain, monitor, and track production schedule, inventory and equipment. Ensure high standards of product quality to meet with growing demand from wholesale and retail accounts.
4. Hire, train and supervise a crew of multinational bakers with varying degrees of experience in the bakery. Training includes classroom lessons and on-the-job learning. Discipline and conduct performance evaluation. Prepare weekly work schedules and direct trainees for maximum labor efficiency and control of food cost.
5. Develop Hot Bread Kitchen’s bakery curriculum that will include units on food safety, equipment usage, kitchen math, proper mixing, proofing and baking, job search and more
6. Expand market for breads by becoming a secondary spokesperson for Hot Bread Kitchen, this includes speaking to media and public events about our unique line of breads
7. Ensure sound financial management and sustainability of the business by monitoring food and labor costs, purchase orders, weekly/monthly inventory,
8. Work to reflect deep commitment to excellence in the utilization of locally grown ingredients and maintaining quality that meets or exceeds customer expectations
9. Coordinate and communicate with the management team. Attend management meetings as required.
10. Perform related tasks as required
Required Skills/Experience:
- Minimum 5+ years professional experience in an artisanal bakery. Experience should include work in a high-output bakery and a minimum of 3-years supervisory experience
- Extremely knowledgeable about bread science, baker’s percentages, and formula development, including sourdoughs, slow fermentation, and grains other then wheat
- Knowledge of and passion for artisan baking and international breads
- Knowledge of proper health and sanitation guidelines including handling, preparation & storage
- Experience in culinary education or teaching baking
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to read, write and speak in English is required.
- Commitment to the kitchen as job training environment. Strong leadership, coaching and development skills. Exceptional prioritization and organizational skills
- Computer and marketing skills. Ability to use MS Office (Word, Excel, Email) is required
- Bachelor’s and/or Culinary degree. DOH certification is a plus.
- Second language and driver’s license are preferred.
Additional Information:
Full-time salaried position that will include nights and weekends. After three months of continuous employment health care benefits provided. Wage and salary will be commensurate with experience.

Bakers
Baking Trainees
Do you have knowledge of a traditional bread recipe? Interested in learning how to bake in an industrial kitchen and start a career in the food industry?
Hot Bread Kitchen’s intensive training program serves immigrant women who are entrepreneurial, passionate about food, and eager to market their breads. We make it a priority to reach out to women who lack opportunities for professional development. To date, Hot Bread Kitchen has trained bakers from Morocco, Mali, Mexico, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Chad, Tibet, and Ecuador. Diversity is one of our team’s greatest assets and we encourage foreign-born women of all nationalities to apply.
While a basic level of English is required to communicate in the kitchen, we provide individualized ESL classes so that our bakers can perfect their language skills. Our training is geared toward women who have experience baking at home and recipes they are interested in developing; however, professional baking experience is not required.

Incubator Kitchen
Volunteer Enterprise Coach
HBK Incubates is the newest program of Hot Bread Kitchen. Its mission is to help entrepreneurs grow successful food businesses and to create more paths to business ownership for low-income women and minorities. We do this by offering commercial kitchen rental at sliding-scale rates and recipe development, enterprise coaching and business scale-up.
HBK Incubates seeks volunteers with business experience to provide weekly one-on-one coaching for the start-up entrepreneurs in the program in topics such as accounting and marketing at our East Harlem location. Availability weekdays during the hours of 9am-5pm is preferable.
Responsibilities:
- Meet every two weeks with entrepreneurs to review progress, discuss and address business challenges and create action steps
- Prepare appropriate discussion topics, tools, homework assignments
- Work with HBK staff and entrepreneur to establish goals and track progress
- Incorporate relevant curriculum from Hot Bread Kitchen’s library, administer diagnostics to evaluate and record business’ progress
- Attend periodic workshops with Hot Bread Kitchen staff and volunteers
Skills and Experience Desired:
- Experience in general management, consulting or professional services
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Willingness to communicate regularly with Hot Bread Kitchen staff, accept feedback and share resources with HBK staff and volunteers
- Commitment to HBK mission
This volunteer opportunity requires a minimum commitment of 3-4 hours per week (2-3 hours of coaching, 1 planning). Coaching is generally conducted during our office hours, Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm, with additional hours worked out of office for planning. Schedule to be determined based on coach and business’ availability. This position requires a minimum 6-month commitment.

Culinary Support Coaches
HBK Incubates is looking for Culinary Support Coaches to work with new businesses on 10 hours of on-site one-on-one coaching with a trained professional who is well versed in their type of production. We are looking to build a roster of excellent FCI alumni who can lend their expertise—be it culinary,pastry, or chocolate.
Culinary Support Coaches will work with our small businesses to provide expertise and feedback on best practices. For example, a new French macaroon producer might need help with scaling up their recipe for commercial production, recipe development, and/or streamlining their production to be more efficient in the kitchen. Another example could be working with one of our caterer clients, who might need help in timing and execution. After each session with a client, Culinary Support Coaches will provide written and verbal
documentation and feedback on work with each business via the Progress Tracking Discussion Sheet.
Other Information:
- Time commitment of usually 4-5 hour shifts.
- Wage: $15/hr., less than ten hours per week.

Internships & Volunteer Opportunities
Marketing and Outreach Intern
Responsibilities Include:
- Assist the Sales Team in developing a weekly schedule of demos and tastings in grocery stores and greenmarkets
- Participate in all aspects of the demo promotion events including the set up and staffing of demos, administering samples, and conducting mission outreach
- Help develop marketing and point of sale materials pertaining to Hot Bread Kitchen’s product and mission
- Conduct research about participation opportunities in New York City food events and with current or prospective retailers
- Research and compile recipes to be used in Hot Bread Kitchen marketing materials
Skills and Experience Desired:
- Minimum 2 years post-high school education
- Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with people of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.
- Excellent communication, writing, editing, research skills
- Excellent public speaking skills

- Liase with community members and prospective program participants by fielding calls and face-to-face meetings

- Develop and compile content for HBK newsletters
- Additional duties supporting HBK’s participant training, and organizational development as needs arise
