After working in the same job for over 25 years, New York Native Jennifer was experiencing burnout. She had always been curious about the culinary world, but didn’t know where to start. That’s when she discovered Hot Bread Kitchen. At a job fair hosted by our community partners at Common Point, Jennifer learned about Culinary Fundamentals. When she learned that she would receive both practical training and job placement assistance, she knew she had found the perfect program.“I spoke to the Hot Bread Kitchen representative at the job fair about the program and immediately went home and applied!” she shared.
“Hot Bread Kitchen provided the perfect opportunity for me to finally

pursue my passion.”

Like many students, Jennifer arrived on her first day of training with some nerves. But those fears quickly faded as she immersed herself in the five-week program. From day one the supportive environment, expert Chef Instructors, and clear, step-by-step guidance helped build her confidence. One area Jennifer worried about most was her knife skills. Having little professional kitchen experience, she wasn’t sure how quickly she would pick them up.
“It ended up coming to me very naturally because the demonstrations and instruction from the chefs were so clear and concise,” she shared. “We understood why these skills were so important, and that made all the difference.”
In addition to her sharpened culinary techniques, Jennifer found tremendous value in the professional readiness lessons that provided insight into an industry she was entering for the first time. The lessons introduced students to different types of food establishments such as corporate cafeterias, fast casual restaurants, and commissary kitchens. The lessons also taught Jennifer about all the different types of positions she could pursue, such as a prep cook, pastry assistant, culinary production worker, and more.
“I felt the training was so thorough that it was a seamless transition for me starting my new job. I really felt I was prepared, which was really exciting.”

By the end of the program, Jennifer knew she was interested in a position with a corporate cafeteria. Just two weeks after graduating, Jennifer accepted a prep cook role with Restaurant Associates, a longtime Hot Bread Kitchen employer partner.
Now, Jennifer is nearly a year into her new job as a prep cook and is thriving in the position! In her role, Jennifer is frequently utilizing her new knife skills, preparing vegetables and fruits for the salad and smoothie bars.
For Jennifer, her move into the kitchen wasn’t simply a career change. It was the realization of a long-held dream. As she continues to grow professionally, Hot Bread Kitchen remains a resource, partner, and champion in her corner. Her journey is proof that it’s never too late to pursue a new passion—and that with the right support, a fresh start can lead to an exciting new future.
